Age of the Vikings: 180 Degrees

Fahrenheit or Celsius, it's all up to you....
This thread is a format for airing of opinions and open discussion.
A place where you can 'Put it out there' and see what comes back....
maybe you'll see a turn-around of your topic....maybe you'll DO a turn-around
on your topic!
Watch out though....(to quote Buster Poindexter) things could get HOT! HOT! HOT!
As I write this we are nearing the end of the fifth incarnation of this thread, *S* Quite remarkable as the first one was started on February 6th of last year. It was intended as a place for respectful discussion of current events and has succeeded quite well. Marquis de Fad is our police officer, and has had little to do in the way of issuing warnings to people who have gotten out of line. Given the usual problems associated with such forums, we are quite proud of our track record.
180 Degrees was created just in time to save the Novel in question. I was about to pack it in and give up on it. For those of you who were not around at the time, I will share a little background. The Novel was created for a person who never joined it. A combination of RL problems and computer issues caused him to leave the site shortly after the Novel's inception. Through a series of other events I ended up holding the bag, as it were, two years later. I was about to tell the powers that be to axe the thing. Put it out of my misery! I was approached by two people, Mubarakin and Tank Girl, and asked if this Novel could possible host a thread devoted to discussion and debate of current events. They recruited Liaus Horatius as well, to help out, and the rest is history.
Over the course of the past year and a bit, we have covered such obvious things as the war in Iraq and the state of education as well as less obvious matters stemming from those discussions. Some themes tend to repeat and that in itself is interesting. I personally really enjoy reading the opinions of others on the events in the news. I also enjoy the things that others regard as newsworthy. This is often not the same material that the mainstream media is spoon feeding us on a daily basis. The people who post to this thread come from a variety of backgrounds and locations and it is this diversity which I think keeps it vital. Every person is able to bring something of value to the table, so to speak, just by being different. This is the beauty of discussing opinions, there is no black and white or right and wrong, only differing points of view which benefit us all in the sharing thereof.
The only thing I wish, is that we had more people, who are NOT from North America contributing. I do understand that the current american predominance is off putting to those from elsewhere, but unfortunately that is where most of us are from and that is what we know and are hit with every day in our papers and on the Internet. So if I may finish off with a plea? If you are reading this from outside of mainland USA or Canada, and wish to help us see things from another perspective please apply to Vikings, we would love to have you!
