Featured Character - Liaus Horatius

By Goldberry

After a long campaign, I was informed that one of my favorite people, Liaus Horatius was elected as one of the Historian's Featured Characters. Then I was asked to be the one to interview him. 'Wow, what an honor. Me? Interview The Liaus Horatius?' So, one cold day I wrote up some questions that I was dying to ask him, and I'm sure you were wondering too. So here we go, the things we've been dying or not-so dying to ask:

Q: Will you tell us a bit about yourself (RL or character)?

A: I've been a puppet a pauper a pirate a poet A pawn and a King I've been up and down and over and out And I know one thing I know we left for Africa drunk & early on the morning of the 13th! After 7 days on water (and 3 days on the boat) we finally arrived in deepest darkest Africa We immediately started a vigorous routine of up at 6… breakfasted and back in bed by 8! This proceeded for the next 3 months, after a while we got so good we where back in bed by 7!!!

Okay... well....

Q: What brought you to Pan Historia?

A: The Loony Wagon….seriously I came by, what's probably a common route of Ancient Sites to Ancient Vines to here

Ah, yes, Ancient Sites... I've heard of that... so.... I suppose the next question is a little dumb... you were already hooked, but oh, well...

Q: Why did you join Pan?

A: As a creative outlet and a distraction from work boredom…..as well as the opportunity to meet and write alongside other nuts, er, I mean creative types.

Oh, so you think I'm a nut, huh? HUH? Well, okay so I can be a bit of a nut...

Q: Do you do any writing outside Pan?

A: Most of the writing I do is business reports and analysis so I have come to look at my indulging in a bit of silliness and discussion here as a way of staying sane!

Sane? I've never really thought of you being sane... I hope I never see you insane!...just joking...*grin* You've posted in at least 16 books and novels, and that is just in one of your characters!

Q: Which of your many novels and books on Pan is your favorite and why?

A: That's a tough one since it all depends on my mood at the time…lately I've been enjoying the debates at 180 Degrees (Vikings Novel Board) and the 'Cheap Detective' silliness of Common Plea….they're both a LOT of fun!

Yes, those are both two very good novels. All those who are reading this: check them out... check them out.... You are always telling me of books and movies that I ought to read and see.

Q: What is your favorite bound-book or author is your favorite?

A: At this time of year I always re-read Katzantzakus' The Last Temptation Of Christ and every summer I like to re-read the Tolkien trilogy (I find the clear cut good/evil dichotomy centering) and I like Carl Sagan's science speculation books like Broca's Brain and The Dragons Of Eden

Q: Who, what, or where do you find inspiration or motivation for writing?

A: I like to play off scenes from movies or songs. My posts generally follow the same meter as a joke, Non-sequitor type intro….convey the info in the body and then end with a punch-line. I usually find the basic inspiration from other peoples’ posts.

Oooo, I better start thinking better on my posts.... You're one of my favorite people because of the daily quotes and poems you send me and others.

Q: What is your favorite quote, joke, or poem?

A: I love quotation and you can find many of my fav's at (Shameless Promotionalism) 'Vikings'!….. My favorite poem is Dante's Divine Comedy (especially the 'Inferno') but my 2nd favorite would go better here "We shall not cease from exploration And the end to our exploring Will be to find ourselves at the place from which we started And know it for the first time" ….T.S. Elliot

Yes, check out 'Vikings'... check out 'Vikings'....

Q: Will you share with us where your name, Liaus Horatius, comes from?

A:OK, this is a bit of a story….I 1st stumbled across Ancient Sites about 2 ½ years ago while researching some nuances of Colleen McCollough's 'Rome' series. I liked what I saw but didn't want to pick a pretentious name…..My RL family name in Italy (prior to Ellis Island bastardization was Lia, so I just latinized in with a 'male' cognomen, 'Lia-us' and I always liked C.S. Forresters [Horatio] Hornblower stories hence Horatius.

Wow, that is one of the more interesting name stories I've heard. Very creative, that's Liaus for you!

Q: What are you looking forward to on Pan?

A: More of the same…a continuation of the creative spirit and silliness.

Q: Tank Girl asks, Do you have the answer to life, the universe, and everything?

A: I'd have to paraphrase Billy Crystal from The Princess Bride "A good Mutton, Lettuce and Tomato sandwich where the mutton is nice and lean … they're SO perky!"… also (from the same movie) "Life is pain … anybody who tells you different is trying to sell you something"

You just always have things up your sleeve don't you? Well... our interview is coming to an end...

Q: Do you have anything else you would like to add?

A: Yes ... there's no substitute for involvement ... get out there and get things done and don't be afraid to look silly or even fail! But most important MAKE IT FUN!

So that was my interview with Liaus Horatius, everyone's favorite man to love and hate. He is probably one of the most funny and friendly people on Pan. He certainly is worth knowing.
