Featured Character: Goldberry

by Lady Isabella

GoldberryQ: Tell us a little bit about yourself...

A: Well... let's see... I'm quite a bit younger than a lot of people think. I'm not going to say how young, but old enough not to make any difference in you opinion of me. (And then there is Goldberry... she is much older than she looks...) I live on a farm in the Heartland of America. I raise a whole bunch of different animals. The largest of which are llamas. I enjoy gardening, volunteering, reading, painting, and of just since the past year- writing.

Q: Why did you join PH?

A: One of my mother's coworkers is a member here. She told my mom about it, she checked it out, it wasn't her cup of tea, and curiosity got the better of me. I was addicted within the first hour. 'The One Ring' was what really got me going, but that was just the beginning.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a member here at Pan Historia?

A: The friends, hands down. There are no other kind of people on the planet. They are all great in their own ways, some of them more than others. Being a newcomer (three years) in practically the middle of nowhere, I don't have too many friends I see very often. Pan has been a bit of my outlet to the world. If I need to talk to someone about something, I have people.

Q: What are your greatest accomplishments, either in RL or here at Pan?

A: Oh, gosh... that is a tough one. Well, so far- I've been able to reach most of my dreams. I've been able to climb the steps to the place I have wanted to get. I tripped on a couple stairs, but I kept on going. Right now I am at a landing, I have reached the top of one of my dreams, and I am trying to decide what to do next. So in short, being able to reach my dreams.

Q: Besides being a member of many novels and reference books, I noticed you are a member of the novel The One Ring. Who is your favorite Tolkien character? Book?

A: Another tough one... of course I like the idea of Goldberry, but because Tolkien never really did much with her, it is tough to really like her a lot. I suppose I like Pippin the most. He started out just a kid, and ended up being a hero. He is fun-loving, but knows what the word duty means. I wish there were more people like him out there. They all seem to either be fun-loving slackers, or they are uptight workaholics. I love all of Tolkien's little-known works, but for my favorite book I would have to say "The Fellowship of the Ring". It was the one of the three "Lord of the Rings" books that was the best to read. "The Hobbit" was good, but it was just a fraction of the world that Tolkien created.

Q: When did you first begin to read Tolkien's work and why did the character of Goldberry appeal to you the most?

A: I first was introduced to 'The Lord of the Rings' when I was about eight. My mother started reading it to me at night. I wasn't really old enough to appreciate it until I was fifteen. I read "The Hobbit" when I was about eleven. Goldberry appealed to me because you only saw a glimpse of who she is in Tolkien's works. I like to be original in my characters. He dropped only hints of who and what she is and was. From what I interpret, she is a graceful, magical, deep character, almost what I feel is the "essence of Tolkien". (At least in the few women characters he writes.) It gives me a lot to work with. There are very few boundaries.

Also, Goldberry attracted me because she is blonde. Blondes really do have more fun it seems. I have had a ton of fun writing her in "Into the Woods". In that novel she really "lets her hair down", and so do I. It is almost like a storybook soap opera with a whole bunch of humor thrown in. That novel is rib-cracking. It has many great writers in it.

In fact, Pan Historia, in whole, has many great writers. Pan has made me a greater person. So in conclusion I would like to thank the great staff here, plus all my wonderful friends that have stood by me through thick and thin.
