Featured Staff: Calliope - Making Dreams Real

by Isobel Delgado

Calliope is one of our most friendly and helpful staff members (not that all our staff isn't friendly and helpful...). She was very patient and answered my questions back when I was a cub, and I've had several people comment to me what a wonderful introduction to Pan she gave them. She even provided a synopsis of a storyline in a novel I joined so I would be up to speed with everyone! And now that she's an Agent, I hear she's doing wonders to help spiff up various aspects of Pan Historia. But what makes this "dream muse" tick? I delve deep into her psyche to come up with the following answers:

Q: The interrogation begins!... Why did you join PH and what is your favorite part about being a member here at Pan Historia? Did you write anywhere before Pan?

A: I found the (now defunct) SciFiVines while surfing one day, and got immediately hooked *grins* Since then, I've always belonged to writing communities, and have dragged our stories to two sites, our final home being Pan. What I love about Pan is the community, and how everyone contributes their talents, imagination and knowledge to over a hundred different forums. There's always something to read here, and something to write. *grins*

Q: Tell us something about your character, Calliope. A muse, a vampire... she seems to have many facets!

A: *smiles* Calliope is one of my oldest names, and probably the one that best suits me. Although the Calliope of greek myth is the Muse of epic poetry, to me, she is a Muse of Dreams. Her different faces come from the ability to become whatever we want to in dreams. I have written her as a Vampire and Dancer in the Moulin Rouge (a role which is still ongoing in the Paris threads in Tempest's Sanctuary), as a fallen Muse that must live as a mortal until she writes a poem worthy of the Gods, and as an adventurer who specializes in acquiring treasures. There are still a few facets hidden in dreams, I think, and I've had to really resist joining in several more stories since I arrived at Pan. LOL If I had the time to write them, I would!

Q: What do you like best about being an Agent here at Pan Historia? What did you like about being an Editor?

A: What I love best about being an Agent is helping with all the different behind the scenes facets of Pan. I love creating novels, working on remodeling and updating the Staff page, and helping with the FAQ and other Pan pages, and the genre's Genies.

What I loved best about being an Editor, was meeting and helping new members. I love showing off Pan, and helping people get settled and make their homes reflect their characters and themselves. And in a lot of ways, I still do that. I still help people and get lots of questions, and chat with lots of people. And it's wonderful! LOL

Q: Got any tips for would-be writers and role-players? Any pet peeves? Any things you particularly like?

A: Hmmm... Tips... LOL Well, I guess the best piece of advice I could give is to talk to your fellow writers. If you want to join in, maybe have questions, or ideas, or comments, or need to know something, or just want to know who you're writing with, then message your fellow members. It takes communication to make things work.

Pet peeves, eh? *grins sheepishly* I do have one, when it comes to writing and RP... Consistancy. That is huge with me. Everyone makes mistakes, people forget things, but then do you ask to have it fixed or just let it slide into chaos?? LMAO I really wish people would try to maintain consistancy whenever possible, and communication is often essential to that. Using my characters in posts in a way that is inconsistant with what I've created is related to that. And once again, communication can help resolve it. *Smiles*

But what I really love, is seeing everyone's imagination bloom and create a million different stories here on Pan *smiles*

Q: You're very active in Tempest's Sanctuary, the Paris threads. Could you tell us a little about your story and the setting there?

A: *wicked grin* Paris is a vampire/creature of the night story set in the late 1890's, at the Moulin Rouge, a swanky Hotel, a Magic Shop and the Streets of Paris. We have different threads for those locations, to facilitate as many stories as people want to create.

Calliope in Paris is a performer at the Moulin Rouge. An ancient vampire, she feeds as much from lust as she does from blood, and uses her show to facilitate that. Currently, she has struck an uneasy alliance with Ricco, a god of Chaos and former lover, alternately loving and fearing him. She has also been summomed by the Tribe, a clan of vampires to which she has a mysterious allegance, though she doesnt' know why....

Currently, we have several evil forces that threaten Paris, but most are hidden underneath the surface, waiting to come to light, or to dark, as it were... LMAO

Q: Got any favorite authors who inspire you?

A: Clive Barker is without a doubt my favorite author. His novels are unbelievably imaginative and compelling, and he has a wonderful writing style. And every novel/ series is different from the last. You never know what is going to happen.

But so many authors inspire me. J.K. Rowling, Anne Rice, Margaret George, Richard Adams, Gary Jennings.... and the list goes on and on! LOL

Q: Which Pan Historia novels or characters do you find particularly interesting (and I'm not fishing for compliments!)

A: I really love the Gobbiez Wurld novel LMAO I love how people can create realistic parody to mimic the RL absurdity out there, and do it in a fantasy context *Grins* And I love all the unique and hysterical characters that people have added, both in the novel and on the community boards! We really have a lot of very funny posts!

Q: In some random hypothetical roleplay, what sort of character would be your greatest "stretch", but that you might consider tackling sometime? If you wish to reveal, what other things do you already participate in here at Pan? (I stole this from someone else's questions but I like it!)

A: Well, there's nothing hypothetical about my choice LOL I would say that Jewel Ree in Gobbiez Wurld is my biggest stretch. Mostly because writing comedy is much harder than writing anything else, for me. Writing drama, or a heartfelt scene, or even erotica, is based on RL and comes naturally. But writing comedy is hard, because so much of what is funny is subjective to the reader. And writing funny posts while making them a parody based on RL events and situations makes it even harder! But I'm really enjoying the challange, and the unique "realistic" method we've chosen to write these posts, making them look like they're RL items or television shows.

On Pan, I write in a lot of different genres, with several different characters. But if anyone is truly curious, they can find out with a little research, or by asking *smiles*

Q: What are your greatest accomplishments, either in real life and/or Pan Historia?

A: I take a lot of pride in all my creations, which include jewelry, beadwork, weaving and graphics/html as well as writing. I get so much joy out of showing people what I've created from my imagination. I love making my dreams real. *smiles*

Q: Just how much do you hate answering questions about yourself?

A: I hate it less than dental work, but I really should be posting right about now..... LMAO!
