Action Fanfic?
by Raisa Derevko

Alright, so I had a little problem writing this edition of Crime Tech. Not only did I procrastinate, I just couldn’t come up with anything to write. I sat at work looking up definitions of fan fiction, different crime related fanfic sites (since PanHistoria is blocked) and still nothing spoke to me. Here I am past due on my deadline and still struggling for what to write. I’m out of my element here.

At the moment the Action Genre boasts one true fan fiction novel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Clash of Steel. This novel is based on the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean series. The novel features characters from the movie such as Commander Norrington, Captain Jack Sparrow, Bootstraps Bill Turner, and William Turner. Unfortunately this beautifully crafted fan fiction hasn’t been active since March. However I suggest a read of their boards, as the story is well crafted and gives your imagination a vivid playground to read and run away in.

In the past the Action Genre was host to CSI: Los Angeles, a loose version of fan fiction base on the CSI series. While this novel played on the premise of the series, it required writers to create their own characters and own crime scenes. Urban Rule was also a loosely based fan fiction novel, taking after many of the crime shows on TV like Third Watch, Law and Order, NYPD Blue; however the novel never really got off the ground.

My point in all of this? I guess I really don’t have one. Crime related fan fiction just isn’t prominent at PanHistoria. This is a great opportunity for those looking for novel ideas. The membership and interest is out there. Many people have toyed with having another crime novel in the action genre, I’ve heard the buzz. So maybe that’s my point in this addition of Crime Tech, is it really that hard to ask for a little crime around here!

Well folks, sorry that wasn’t as tantalizing as it could have been. But that’s not all I have, in celebration of our own Pirate fan fiction novel I thought this news article I found by the Associated Press was fitting:

Man arrested at Macy's in NYC for carrying sword
May 26th, 2008
NEW YORK (AP) — A man who was carrying a rusted pirate-style sword through Macy's flagship store in Manhattan is facing charges of criminal possession of a weapon.

Police say 29-year-old Lawrence Jackson was brandishing the curved sword while visiting Macy's Herald Square store Sunday with his girlfriend.

He told police he was carrying the sword because he is a member of a kickball team whose players often wear pirate-themed costumes. He maintains he was on his way to a game when he was arrested.

What the article doesn’t state is Mr. Jackson also had an outstanding warrant for drug possession and when searched at the scene was also brandishing some marijuana. Go figure!
