TEFNUT

by Nefeti Meritamen

Tefnut is the goddess associated with moisture or damp, corrosive air. She and her brother-husband Shu were created by Atum according to the Heliopolitan creation story, where she is part of the Ennead. The children of Shu and Tefnut were Geb and Newet (Nut).

Tefnut and Shu became the Eyes of Re, Tefnut also taking the head of a lioness and Shu that of a lion. Tefnut was also identified with the uraeus, or rearing cobra worn on the heads of the Pharaohs, and in this connection she appeared in the Pyramid Texts in the form of a serpent rearing from a scepter.
