SYCAMORE

by Tjeti Sobkneferu

In the Book of the Dead, Chapter 109, the twin sycamore tress of turquoise stood at the east gate of the heavens, from which the sun-god Re issued forth each morning. In the Pyramid Texts there is written "yonder tall sycamore in the east of the sky, quivering of leaves, on which the Netjeru sit." It was a celestial tree and linked with Newet (Nut), Het-Hert (Hathor), and with Aset (Isis). Het-Hert was called "Lady of the Sycamore" and worshipped in this form near Mennefer (Memphis). It was represented in funerary context with outstretched arms offering water or food to the deceased. There is one representation in the burial chamber of Thutmose III that shows the sycamore with a breast suckling the king.
