The shewet (shadow) is one of the five essential parts of the individual, which included the the ba, the akh, the name, and the ka. The shadow or shade was considered an essential part of an individual, necessary to protect it from harm. For instance the king was often portrayed under a fan or sunshade. The power of protection of the solar shadow could be transferred to a person when it passed over them - and the painted tombs in the Valley of the Kings took account of the sun's shadow as it passes through the netherworld. The shewet is described in the funerary texts as an entity that has great power and is capable of great speeds. The shadow as depicted leaving the tomb in the company of the ba bird. From the Book of the Dead, Chapter 92: "Open a way form soul (that one) one who controls his feet that it may see the great god within the barque of Re (on the day) of counting souls." The "Shadow of Re" was used to refer to the holy places of the sun-god at Amarna.
