![]() Mut is the vulture-goddess consort of Imen (Amun) at Ipet-isut (Karnak), mother of Khons. She seems to have replaced his earlier consort of Amaunet. She appears, enthroned beside him or standing behind him as "Mistress of the Nine Arrows" - symbolic of the enemies of Egypt. Mut is often portrayed with the vulture headress surmounted by the white crown. Her linen dress is patterned and bright red or blue. She personified Upper Egypt and often carries a long papyrus sceptre. She is, however, more commonly associated with her leonine form, even combining with Bastet to make Mut-Bastet. Mut was associated, like Aset (Isis) and Het-Hert (Hathor), with being divine mother to the Per'a-a. She is often shown, in amulets and the like, suckling the king. She is so indistinguishable from Aset in these images, that it is often only the inscription of her name that allows clear identification. Along with Sekhmet, Bast, and Tefnut, she is one of the Eyes of Re, fierce lioness aspects of the daughters of the sun-god.
