MENAT

by Tjeti Sobkneferu

The menat was a broad collar or necklace that comprised several rows of beads and had a counterpoise that hung down the back when worn. It had religious significance and was imbued with power of healing from Het-Hert (Hathor). It is shown here, as is typical, being presented to Sety I by Het-Hert in a scene from his tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Het-Hert carried the epitaph 'great menat' and the menat was often carried by her son Ihy, along with the sistrum. It was often used as a percussion instrument like the sistrum.
