INPW

Anubis, Yinepu, Anpu

by Nefeti Meritamen

God of the dead and of embalming and mummification. The cult of Inpw (Anubis), who was usually depicted as a black dog or jackal, was eventually associated with that of Wesir (Osiris), the new ruler of the dead. He was said to have wrapped the body of the deceased Wesir. He was given the titles neb-ta-djeser, ‘lord of the sacred land’, or necropolis, and khenty-she-netjer, ‘foremost of the divine booth,’ where mummification took place. The jackal-headed figure of Inpw appeared on the doors of numerous rock tombs as their guardian, and when bodies were embalmed the priest wore a jackal mask as the god’s representative. Inpw also conducted the ‘Weighing of the Heart’ in the Hall of Judgment before Wesir and the 42 gods.
