Netherworld Netjert (goddess) or demon that was a union of the most feared animals in the Ancient Egyptian world view. She had the head of a crocodile, the forelegs of a lion, the rear of a hippotamus. Her name means 'Eater of Hearts' or 'Devourer of the Dead', her epitaph was 'Great of Death' and it was her function to devour the hearts of the deceased, those that failed judgement in the Hall of Two Truths. Those thus destroyed lost all existance, the worst fate an Egyptian could imagine. The dead's heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at and those that weighed heavy were given to Ammut.
