Bang the drum slowly
To feel the tattered beat
March in the silence son
And wait for the herald's retreat

The bugler's horn a lonely sound
Echoes from peak to peak
Long dead eyes no longer hear
The awaited note they seek

Bang the drum slowly
Let it call to those who fell
Lure them home to eternal light
In grace we bid farewell

Let its beat go on and on
Until each solider is home again
Let us not become withdrawn

So pound the beat just one last time
Sing for our brave young men
Pray for each haggard solider's face
To bring them all back again
