Welcome to the Pan Historian’s
November 2008 Edition

"Location, location, location!"

To a geographer location means where something is located in terms of longitude and latitude. To real estate agents who repeat the mantra of location, location, location, that word means extra money when they make a sale. To the movie studio, location is where the cast and crew are filming when not in the studio. Location has a special meaning at PanHistoria; it gives the novels we write flavor and provides the background for our writing.

Some novels here have imaginary locations, but in others the locations are very real. Writers have been known to pour over plane and train schedules to be sure that the characters they have created are making genuine travel arrangements. Other writers spend many hours researching the area where their novel takes place. The setting contributes to the story and in a way becomes one of the characters.

In this edition of the PanHistorian we are looking at locations—real locations—and how they are used at Pan not only in various novels but also in reference books. We are exploring the places that exist in real life as well as in our writing. In addition we had to use this opportunity to celebrate the location where our “fun bunch” met this fall.

Thus, in this edition of the PanHistorian we are taking you, the reader, “on location” exploring some of the real places that are part of PanHistoria.
