A Tribute to Mirjam/ Meritites

by KhenumRa Hatshepsut

On February 2, 2009, Mirjam Nebet/ Meritites passed into the Field of Reeds after losing her fight with cancer.

This had been her second round; several years ago, she'd been diagnosed, and had had a successful surgery. Unfortunately, the cancer returned in 2008, and there was nothing the doctors could do. She had gone into hospice in November of 2008.

Kate Jonsson, known as Mirjam/Meritites, was a wonderful woman, full of happiness and life. She was small in stature, but big in spirit. She shared herself with those who asked, always teaching, always learning. She traveled to Egypt several times, as well as to the US and India; she had a love of acting, which translated well to her writing. She participated in many theatrical endeavors in her home town of Molnlycke, Sweden. Her immediate family consists of her husband and a sister; her beloved cat, Connie, went ahead to prepare for her arrival in Amenti in July, 2008.

Kate delighted in sharing her extensive knowledge of Ancient Egyptian religion, and worked long hours making web pages that she put up on the web. They remain, a testament to her love of Egyptian Gods and the Goddess, Aset, whom she worshiped faithfully. You can see some of them here.

It's hard to sum up a loved one's life in a few paragraphs, especially when that person was Mirjam. We'd planned to meet in Egypt in 2010, and we laughed and talked about the things Mirjam and KhenumRa would see, and what they would talk about. I plan to still make that pilgrimage to Philae- her favorite place - and I know she will be there with me in spirit. I was honored to know her, and write with her as her husband for 12 wonderful years. My life was made better, because she was in it. Her loss leaves a hole in me that will take a long time to heal.

Many people called Mirjam/Meritites friend; several called her sister; and a few loved her dearly. She was an original. And she will be greatly missed.
