Memories of Halloween Past
by Monster Hunter Alchemist
Halloween has always been my favorite time of year. I've enjoyed decorating and carving pumpkins. The last time I went Trick-Or-Treating was when I was about fifteen.
It was with a couple friends, and after we had gone around the neighborhood once, we came back home, changed costumes and went around again. And yes, we actually got away with that.
My best costume was one that included a hood-type mask with a black mesh front, which covered my face completely. This I wore in middle school. I wore that face mask all day and barely spoke unless I had to in class.
Nobody could tell who I was until after I spoke or removed the hood. There was a costume contest and I won second place, got some candy for my trouble; which wasn't too bad actually.
I never had any scary moments that I can recall. Nothing about Halloween has ever frightened me.
The only thing I don't like is when people call the holiday "evil", when it really isn't. Halloween started out as a Celtic holiday(among others) called Samhain. It involved honoring family members who passed on, including the harvest, among other things. When it transformed into the modern-day Halloween, that's when candy giving and such was created.
The ancients did dress up in costumes designed to frighten "evil" spirits who'd returned to walk the earth on that night. And this is where the modern dressing up comes from.
I still dress up each year, decorate the house and carve pumpkins. And I always will until I no longer can. Halloween/Samhain is my favorite holiday.
