Interview with Romantic:
Vivain du Lac of Courtly Love
by Alias

What drew you to Courtly Love?
Vivain
I was interested in doing something that was actually romantic for the Romance Genre. I happen to believe that bodice ripping is only sexy if there has been a good build up with plenty of tension, and it seemed like what is missing in modern culture is, often, romance. One of the most romantic movies I have ever seen is "The Age of Innocence" where the lovers are separated by societal mores and legal ramifications. It is the innocent young maid who out maneuvers the lovers in this instant and that too is interesting because of the subtlety. Society holds the lovers in a tight dance and one step out of rhythm condemns them. The concept of Courtly Love is similar. It's all about the ideal of love, but to consummate that love is to invite punishment and dishonor.
What kinds of writers would would you like to see join Courtly Love?
Vivain
The kinds of writers I would like to see are people that are interested in that tension between desire and fulfillment.
Have you had to do much research to stay somewhat historically accurate?
Vivain
The medieval period is not my comfort zone so I do have to do a bit of research for every post at this point, but I love research so that's part of the fun.
What are you looking forward to your character doing in Courtly Love?
Vivain
With the character of Vivain, I'm looking to fully explore what the pursuit of courtly love and all its ideals would be like for someone who really believes in them; in other words a total romantic.
