What is this? You scroll down the names of the Reference Books, on the Reference Book thread, and you, perhaps, pause at The Symposia, and click. Picture of a guy standing on something, looking at a library book. No computer in sight. However, he's pretty intent as he searches. Maybe, just maybe, it's important.
It's important to him. That much is clear.
The Symposia is a Reference Book created to find a home for all sorts of reference material that doesn't fit elsewhere on PanHistoria. Some of the topics here may lead to incipient Reference Books, but that all depends on the interest in them. If not, the specialists and hobbyists still have a place to play here. We can talk, interact, and just plain learn new things. The Book is set up for Symposia on a range of topics, and interaction and discussion is encouraged, indeed preferred. However, recognizing that some people have written up their own articles on favorite topics, there’s a section for stand-alone articles, too.
You might not believe it, but there's a lot of interesting stuff pertaining to the history of each letter of the alphabet. I didn't know most these things, but the reading is enticing! A new symposium topic getting underway discusses Russian history. And one of the most popular symposium topics has been the history of everyday conveniences, the things today we often take for granted. What did people do before them, how did they get invented, and what were these early objects of convenience like? Come on by, and suggest your own particular area of expertise or interest, and prepare for discussion that may well take on a life of its own.
A Reference Book wouldn’t be complete without its own watering hole, in this case The Book and Bottle, where Librarians and their friends (anyone who likes reference) can sit down and slop a little tea or maybe some red wine on the pages. (Don’t worry, magically it will clean up!)
