Minerva McGonagall

McGonagall was Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts until her demotion in September of 2001, after Albus Dumbledore disappeared and Harriet Snider became Headmistress of Hogwarts. She regained the position in the summer of 2003, when Snider and a handful of other professors were arrested for their crimes against both students and staff. McGonagall supported Dumbledore to the fullest during his absence and even after his death remains one of his staunchest supporters. She is a stern, strict witch with little patience for those who do not follow the rules.

McGonagall is not afraid to punish students of her own house, Gryffindor, and even take points away from them if it means losing the House Cup. In fact, in her zeal she has taken excessive points from Gryffindor students. Her students have remarked that they wish she would favor them the way that Snape always seems to favor Slytherins. Regrettably, she lost her position as Head of Gryffindor in September 2001 when the new regime took over Hogwarts. She resumed her old position in time for the 2003-2004 school year.

McGonagall is an Animagus who can turn into a tabby cat at will. When a cat, she has markings around her eyes similar to the square glasses she wears.

McGonagall taught Transfiguration classes at Hogwarts until March of 2002, when she was arrested for her part in the Order of the Phoenix's raid on Hogsmeade two years earlier. She returned to Hogwarts as professor of Transfiguration after the removal of several professors and Headmistress Snider. McGonagall considers other forms of magic to be somewhat less elegant and more simplistic than Transfiguration. She is famous for giving vast amounts of homework.

McGonagall wears emerald green robes. Her night dress is a tartan bathrobe and hairnet. She carries a lace handkerchief. She disapproves of "letting her hair down," although she did wear a top hat at the Christmas party of 1991 and even giggled and blushed when a rather tipsy Hagrid kissed her on the cheek. At the Yule Ball of 1994, she wore dress robes of red tartan and arranged a rather ugly wreath of thistles around the brim of her hat. She danced with Ludo Bagman.

McGonagall is quite a Quidditch fan. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the Gryffindor team. When she saw Harry Potter catch a Remembrall with a diving grab in midair, she immediately made him the team Seeker and arranged for him to have a broomstick, which was against the rules.

McGonagall spent over five months in Azkaban before being transfered to Goen Bren, a community for Muggle-born, half-blood, and half-breed wizards, and blood traitors as well. She was rescued by a disguised Bill Weasley in January of 2003 and lived in hiding in Vigo, Spain. After recovering, she took an active role with the Order of the Phoenix and participated in the raids at the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts.

After Dumbledore's death in August of 2006, McGonagall became Headmistress of Hogwarts.

McGonagall has an estranged older brother named Menelaus, a nephew named Myron, and two great nephews named Madoc and Malden.--Bio paraphrased from The Harry Potter Lexicon
