As a traveller from a distant land, I'm going to be attempting a bit of a take-over bid and become Queen in order to sort the lack of political control. I promise to be a fair and wise Queen. Tyballa the Fae is helping me too and with her wisdom I know we can bring about peace.

Left-flippered Penguins and Other Interesting Facts

I just got a new book on penguins, and I was so excited by penguins being left-flippered that I thought of writing a post.
A study at MIT showed that 80 percent of penguins prefer their left flipper when building nests or shoving neighbors. (I always knew I liked penguins).
Penguins are some of the most adaptive of all species, for breeds survive in climates where the average temperature is minus 75 (Emperors) to plus 104 degrees (banded).
Emperors live in the harshest climate but have the highest survival rate for a penguin. (I’d like to know how they figured that).
The Emperors never walk on land that doesn’t have ice on it, for they live in Antarctica.
Penguins can survive in Antarctic waters where humans would die in minutes.
How do they survive? One reason is blubber. Another is that penguin feathers are the densest of any bird. There are 70 small, stiff, interlocking feathers per square inch. The Little Blue has 300-400 percent more feathers than a flying bird the same size. They keep them oiled so they are waterproof.
Sadly, the kings have a species name of patagonicus but they aren’t in Patagonia. It turns out they used to, but 19th century seal hunters wiped out the Patagonian colonies.
Penguins can sleep in several positions. Some can sleep while they float in the water. They can also sleep standing up. However, they often sleep side by side with their bills behind their flipper. Other books mention that they are microsleepers and can sleep as little as four minutes.
Some penguins live almost ¾ of their lives at sea.
When diving, Adélies and Gentoos and reduce their heart rates from 100 beats a minute to about 20. (Gee, when I exercise, my heart rate goes up)..
Penguins can jump from water to land up to a height of seven feet and still make an upright landing.
Penguins have been known to use the same underwater sea route for years and swim past the same underwater landmarks.
The average lifespan of a penguin is 15-20 years. The shorter the penguin, the shorter their average lifespan. The oldest known African penguin in the wild was recorded at 24, while African penguins in aquaria have lived to 40! The oldest Little Blue Penguin in the wild was 17.
