Before I came to Middle-earth, I served both Vána and Estë, and dwelt in Lórien tending the trees that grew in the Gardens of Irmo.
The deep shadows of the great trees were my love and when the light of the Two Trees would mingle I would sing of that love. Nightingales followed me and I taught them my songs.
When the Elves awoke on the shore of Cuiviénen, I left Valinor and went to Middle-earth, where I filled its silence with my song and the singing of my birds.
It came to pass that while in the forest of Nan Elmoth I met and fell in love with Elwë who became the Elven-king Elu Thingol, and now I rule at his side. I have used my powers to guard and defend the city with a protection spell called the Girdle of Melian which causes confusion for those not permitted to enter Doriath.
