In the Crown of Thorns Novel:
On the 14th of January 1507, a girl was born in Torquemada, the daughter of Philip I and Juana, kings of Castile. The girl was named Catherine, under her mother's wishes, and she came to the world under very singular circumstances. Born in a period of political uncertainty, orphaned on her father's side who died on 1506, she was the daughter of a queen whose subjects started to call 'Mad'. In 1509 Juana of Castile was incarcerated in the palace of Tordesillas under the orders of her father, Ferdinand II of Aragon.
Catherine shared her mother's captivity, and she grew in a monotonous and closed environment, only broken in 1518 by her 'kidnap' by her brother Charles, the Holy Roman Emperor, who had just arrived in Spain. In 1520 Catherine's fate changed.
Because of the breach between Portugal and Castile about the possession of the Maluku Islands, her brother, the emperor Charles V fixes her marriage with John III. Catherine occupied the throne of Portugal until her husband's death, and was regent on her grandson's minority, King Sebastian, until 1562, in a difficult political set, filled with court factions. Nevertheless she always showed undeniable intelligence and determination. Her life was branded by the tragedy of the death of all her nine children, which lead to a dynastic crises.
