Originating from England, the Braithwaites established themselves in America in around 1779. By the 19th century, they had a bustling slave plantation at their manor, and became one of the richest and most powerful families in Scarlett Meadows on the State of Lemoyne. The abolition of slavery and defeat in the Civil War in 1865 badly damaged the Braithwaites, and they lost a large amount of their wealth.
By 1899, the Braithwaite family still has a significant presence in western Lemoyne, rivaled only by the Scottish Gray family. The Grays arrived in Scarlett Meadows in 1755, then still part of the French possessions in the Americas, and quickly established themselves in the area. Taking advantage of slavery, they brought in a high production of tobacco and cotton. They too lost part of their wealth due to Civil War.
Braithwates and Grays have a long standing rivalry. They are always trying to sabotage each other's business and they cannot stand each others. There is a deep hatred that has decades of history, and bloodshed has not been avoided. Both families have suffered losses and they live to destroy one another.
Penelope Braithwaite is the sixteen year old niece of of Catherine Braithwaite, the matriarch and eldest member of the family. An orphan she has returned to Scarlet Meadows, after finishing her education in the city of Blackwater, in the state of West Elizabeth. And then something unexpected happen...she fell in love with young bookish Beau Gray, the scion of the Gray family.
