Privet. My name is Natalia Alianovna Romanova. I’ve said various things about my childhood. Sometimes I say I was born in 1928 in Stalingrad, and that the Nazis torched my home, and my mother threw me out a window to save me. A soldier, Ivan Petrovich Bezukhov, caught me and raised me.
But I’ve also said that Ivan took me to Department X, and I was raised there as part of the Black Widow Ops Program, where I was trained in espionage and combat in the Red Room facililty in Moscow with 28 other female orphans. I may have been bio-technologically and psycho-technologically enhanced, and I may have been a ballerina at the Bolshoi Theatre, or that may have been a false memory.
Or I was born in 1984 in Stalingrad and trained in the Red Room facility.
You can believe what you want.
Either way, I was born in Stalingrad, which is on the Volga River. It was called Tsaritsyn from 1589-1925, and Stalingrad from 1925-1961. Now it’s called Volgograd. It goes through names like I go through backgrounds. In World War II, the Battle of Stalingrad was one of the bloodiest in the history of wars.
The powers that be arranged for me to marry Alexi Alanovich Shostakov, a famous test pilot, and we had a measure of happiness. During World War II when he was a child, Vasily Karpov rescued him from the wrecked village of Kronas. However, the KGB made him a special operative and told me he had been killed in an experimental rocket crash. He became the Red Guardian, Russia’s answer to Captain America, and they turned him into a cruel person. They recruited me to be a part of the KGB. I became known as the Black Widow. Eventually, I defected and joined S.H.I.E.L.D.

I am Natalia Romanova, I am distantly related on the wrong side of the blanket to Elizabeth of Russia (reigned 1741-1761). I was born in Tsaritsyn, but my family ended up serving a noble family and moved hundreds of miles north to Saint Petersburg, where my family and I cleaned the Winter Palace. The Winter Palace is the monarch’s official residence, and there are about 1,786 doors, 1,945 windows, 1,500 rooms and 117 staircases.
I wanted to get out, so I married the first man who was leaving. Unfortunately, that was Alexei Shostakov. He said he’d take me to the Aleutian Islands in Russkaya Amerika where he would be a fur trapper and hunter. I was completely outnumbered by single men living in temporary settlements who treated the Aleut and Tlingit poorly. I pretended to be a man. While in some ways I loved Alexei, I had to leave.
I took passage aboard the first ship I was able to pay for, which took me to New York City. I became a milliner, although it’s really not suited to me. Still, I own a milliinery store, sell cloth and notions, and make hats, shirts, aprons, hoods, cloaks, and shifts. I’m of the “middling sort” or middle class.
To dispel any problems of a single woman living alone, I live with two vaguely loyalist “cousins,” and the wife of one of the cousins. We don’t get along. Both Victor and Ronald take overlong breaks and are drunks, and Hester isn’t that much better. But I get by, and I have some interesting things going on...
Natala “Nalle” Rostek says she was born on the foggy planet Vatleria in the Calaron Sector, a sector of dubious reputation that is roughly between Hutt space and the Centrality. She says she was born in the village of Miskolc but eventually went to the capital of Gerlachovska by the Kerpathian Ocean.
She did her undergraduate work in liberal studies in Lekua V (known for its many universities), a planet in the nearby Centrality. There, she learned to eat winged crabs and fur-bearing trout, and she learned to love Trammistan chocolate even more. She had a starhopper from Scillai Designs in the Centrality, where it was just her and an astromech droid.
As an undergraduate she took a class in archaeology and worked at a dig in Morvogodine in the Calaron Sector. Morvogodine is a populous planet, and the dig was from recent Morvogodine history.
She liked archaeology so much she got a graduate in xenoarchaeology at the University of Agamar because that planet, although much further away, had a respected xenoarchaeology department.
After graduation, she worked on some Gree digs. Her first dig was at Dantooine, which is much closer to the University of Agamar than it is to the Calaron Sector. She has also been to Asation, a port world of the Gree Enclave in the Veragi sector. [where in the future a survey group will find a piece of Gree technology they can’t identify, so there’s stuff there]. Also in the Veragi sector is the forboding, starless Nharqis’l nebula, where the mythical leviathans called Nharqis'Al are said to live.
At least, this is the archaeological career she put on her resume.
There are a few records of Nalle on Vatleria, and she does first show up in Miskolc and then Gerlachovska. She did get an undergraduate degree and did attend some classes at the University of Agamar. However, what she isn’t saying is she was at that point a treasure hunter.
She found a Varat’k Snarap, a Gree device that created wind-like energy bolts, a Karkak’k Marek, which was a sensor, a repair sphere, and a Gree computer. She has found other things as a treasure hunter.
Then she heard that the InterGalactic Banking Clan was funding a dig on some faraway, ancient world called Lehon, and if the banking clan was interested, so was she. Nalle faked her xenoarchaeological degree and faked some papers, paying a little extra to have them backdated appropriately. She was surprised when she was invited to join the dig, which on the surface was being funded and led by the Obroan institute for Archaeology, Coruscant Branch. The year was 104 BBY, and she went with archaeologists and guards to Lehon.
They ran into trouble and were forced to go into stasis pods to save their lives, but they got a message out and hoped rescue would come.
Rescue came, but in the year 33 BBY.
Now Nalle is in the center of attention in the Coruscant of 33 BBY. How much of her past will people find out? And is there more to her story?
Natalia Romanova will be an attendant of Mary Boleyn, the sister of Anne Boleyn. Natalia was born in Flanders, but her parents were born in Veliky Novgorod, a city that was once part of the Hanseatic League. Her grandfather was a rich trader in Novgorod who traded in furs, wax, flax, and hemp. Then he moved to be a representative for the League in Brugge. However, the League declined and Novgorod stopped being in the League by the start of the 16th century.
In Brugge, Natalia met Mary Boleyn, who was on her way to the court of Margaret, Archduchess of Austria and Regent of the Netherlands. Margaret’s court is in Brussels and is deeper into the Netherlands than Brugge is. Natalia accompanied Mary Boleyn to the court and ended up becoming Mary Boleyn’s attendant.
In 1519, Natalia followed Mary Boleyn to the English court where Mary Boleyn was lady-in-waiting to Queen Katherine. She still lived at court when Mary Boleyn married William Carey in 1520. Natalia attended Mary Boleyn through thick and thin: through Mary being Henry’s mistress, bearing children, becoming a widow, going back to court again under Queen Anne, and finally, and being banished for marrying a soldier for love.
