Alexander Cruise couldn’t recall if there had ever been a time he had not been enhanced in some form or another, with some obscure piece of technology replacing an overused body part; muscles that weren’t entirely biological. What he knew for sure was that he hadn’t been born this way. One of the few things about himself he could be sure of.
He’d forgotten most of his past before Horizon’s Edge, what it was like not to be in pain. He couldn’t remember not being dependent on meds and injections, needing systematic adjustments or that occasional, and far too expensive replacement part or in need of a tweak job here and there when things malfunctioned. As they did! As long as his body performed like he had designed it to, he tried not to think about the down side of it all. What he was capable of in the long run was the only side that mattered. It’s what kept him going. Kept him feeling alive. It was why he lived the way he did.
Life was Hell anyway for a Merc, a Chrome head whose questionable history was not so much the issue anymore. What he could do with what he had was. Determined his future: as volatile as that might be. No memorable regrets behind him, and no fixed eye on the future.
Cruise lived day to day!
Contract to Contract!
But all things considered…
...life in the Private Sector was good...for now!
