Once a promising young officer in the Royal Navy, Sir Nigel Brandon was assigned a berth on their finest aether powered ship, HMS Lydia. Light and swift, but heavily armed, she was the pride of the fleet... until the accident. To this day even the best engineers have not solved the mystery of the Lydia's tragedy. The explosion took the lives of some of the finest officers and men of the Royal Navy. The loss - both of the ship and its crew - serves as a reminder that progress comes at a cost.
Nigel was too close the aether reactor when the blast occurred. Exposure to the fallout left the right side of his face horribly disfigured - among other consequences. Discharged from the service, polite society shunned him due to his deformity. This suited Nigel well as he shuns polite society for their inane conduct and general uselessness.
Given his talents, Nigel - now referred to only as the Phantom - decided to engage in more worthwhile pursuits. Having an uncanny knack for discovering secrets, he was recruited to help protect Her Majesty's government from threats abroad. After several successful missions he was assigned his most difficult task yet - the rescue of Princess Irina Radetzsky of Țarfals.
Having heard of the burgeoning rapport between Țarfals' king and Her Majesty's government, the Czar's agents abducted the princess from the school in Paris where she was sent to study. Currently held captive by the dreaded Third Section, the Czar's secret police force, Irina is kept secluded from the outside world. Her presence is a tool to assure Russia of the cooperation of Țarfals' king... as her only sibling, a brother, is sickly and unlikely to survive to inherit the throne. In an attempt to further secure her loyalty, they have proposed a match between Irina and the Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich.
Infiltrating the Third Section, known for their zealous devotion to the Czar, will be a formidable undertaking. Beyond that the Phantom will need to traverse over a thousand of miles of Russian territory before he can expect any sort of assistance.
"I love sleeping outdoors," Tom said intently.
