In the Deadwood novel:

Just before the war ended, my brother Bart and I... like a lot of Johnny Rebs... joined the Union army as Indian fighters to keep from rotting in a Yankee prison. Two years of that were plenty and when our hitch was over, Little Bend, Texas, our home town, suddenly seemed like the best place on Earth to head for. We hadn't been back in over five years and things had changed. The Union army was running the place now, instead of the men who should have been running it. It seems they didn't cotton to a lot of ex-soldiers making their way back home to make their task more difficult... so we found that we were not welcome.

In those circumstances, we decided to leave... but not having a trade to make us welcome elsewhere we drifted from town to town, living on the only knowledge that our dear pappy had given us: how to play poker.

A wonderful gift from Helen!
Many thanks to her!

Who is the tall, dark stranger there?
Maverick is the name.
Ridin' the trail to who knows where,
Luck is his companion,
Gamblin' is his game.
Smooth as the handle on a gun.
Maverick is the name.
Wild as the wind in Oregon,
Blowin' up a canyon,
Easier to tame.

Riverboat, ring your bell,
Fare thee well, Annabel.
Luck is the lady that he loves the best.
Natchez to New Orleans
Livin' on jacks and queens
Maverick is a legend of the west.

My thanks to de Tourvel printers!
