In the Outlanders Novel:
 Joy is a professor at the University with a specialism in Art History. She teaches a number of classes and has been mesmerized by Kallias into believing he's a fellow professor and a friend.
She is currently renting a set of rooms in a house she owns to Kal and has realized that she enjoys his company and feels safer now that he's moved in.
An only child, Joy unfortunately lost her parents some time ago, but has worked hard to gain her education and a job she loves. She is passionate about her subject and her enthusiasm tends to motivate her students.
