In the Poisoned Crown Novel:
Only surviving child of Jacques d'Harcourt, baron of Montgomery, counselor and chamberlain of King Charles VI, and his wife and heiress of the County of Tancarville, Marguerite de Melun.
Madeleine is presently in the service of Queen Isabeau of Bavaria, a position she despises due to the Queen's violent outbursts and alliance with England. Styled as the Lady of Parthenay, a small fief belonging to her mother, she was not meant to remain the heir to the fortune of the Counts of Tancarville. After her father's death at Agincourt, the Queen attempted to bind herself closer to the Burgundian faction by marrying Marguerite de Melun to a brother of John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy, but that plan failed when Marguerite fell ill and died during the journey to Burgundy.
Unhappy at this turn of events, both the Queen and the English regent, Bedford, denied Madeleine her rightful inheritance. When the County of Tancarville fell into English hands it was given to John Gray for his service to King Henry of England.
