The year is 1778. Nathaniel is a sometimes-soldier, sometimes blacksmith living in the colony of Connecticut. At the outset of hostilities, his sympathies lay with Loyalists, if anything, but he did not go so far as to enlist. The British raid upon Danbury in 1777, however, changed his mind. It wasn't just a battle, the Redcoats wanted to leave an "example". Nathaniel enlisted for six months with the Patriots, and is considering doing so again, once the meager crops go in.
Nathaniel is widowed, his wife having died in childbirth. His little girl is two, now, and he lives in the one-room family farmstead with his mother and a younger, ne'er do well brother.
