I don't know yet what I'm going to do with Verity so I might as well bore you about her name.
One day when driving home from a nearby town I was listening to the NPR station. A journalist-reporter was introduced for a story. I can't even tell you now what that story was though at the time I thought it interesting. What stuck with me the rest of the drive was the person's last name. Folkenflik. I kept thinking what an awesome name and how great it would be to have a character with it.
By the time I got home, I was already running first names through my head. Finding something that seemed to me to go with Folkenflik was not easy. After I looked up the spelling of Folkenflick, I started expanding on the first name search from what I had managed to pull from the dregs of my brain during the drive. Eventually, after too many name pairings to count, I decided upon Verity as a first name. Verity Folkenflik. I repeated the name combination many times aloud and of all the other possible first names I'd had on the list it's the only one I could see going with.
Now, some people might not agree. In fact, I am sure some would not. A few of those people might like the name Ernest, whereas to me, the name Ernest brings to mind a sort of creepy janitor I once knew. He was actually a somewhat nice person but the creepy factor he often exuded always stuck with me. I was not particularly fond of the name Ernest before knowing him and afterwards it definitely went onto the NAMES NEVER TO GIVE A CHILD list.
Though popular, names I also do not favor are Chloe and Zoe. I cannot put into words as to why beyond that both feel weird in my mouth. One of my friends thinks they are the most absolute perfect names and has long desired twin girls just so she can name them Chloe and Zoe. I always just smile and nod when she launches into a discussion about her favorite names and trying for twin girls. I would not want to inadvertently taint her dream names by saying something negative about those names so the situation is very much one of those our mothers would remind, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."
My point? It's very simple. Others may not think Verity Folkenflik is a truly awesome name and cannot fathom why I believe it to be, but I do like it a great deal and think it rather excellent. Now, if I only knew what to do with the awesomely named Verity Folkenflik, I would not have to bore you to tears on how she came to have the name she does.
