Over the shadowy hills and windy peaks she draws
her golden bow, rejoicing in the chase,
and sends out grievous shafts.
History says I was born of the wind, my namesake in my nomadic tongue, because of my speed. The legends speak of my swiftness in battle, how I was so quick that the enemy never saw me coming until it was too late. However, I was born of a mother—and a father of course but a father’s lineage doesn’t matter in the Amazon nation. No, a mother’s lineage was what mattered most. Emerging from obscurity, I was born of a lowly mother named Drita. Determined not to follow in my mother’s inglorious footsteps, I honed my warrior abilities and practiced them until I was able to not only protect but defeat Penthesileia, a daughter of Otrera, Queen of the Kushan tribe. Reassured that I was the best, I set my sights on becoming the greatest Amazon warrior in history. Rather than intimidate my rival, I procured her friendship and we became the best of friends. Nearly inseparable, we prided ourselves in our battle excellence. Soon, I found myself one of the youngest generals in many, many years.
Without any wars in progress and my military career in success, I proceeded to secure my legacy by having a daughter just like me. After an agonizing nine months of pregnancy, my twins were born. The daughter I had hoped for and the son I hadn’t expected. Excited of the distinction that would fall upon my daughter, she received the name Elira. Deciding against killing the boy, as it was believed that twins shared one life force, I disposed of the infant to his father’s people and prayed that nothing ill fell upon him for my daughter’s sake. He received no name from me nor did I inquire the name his foster parents would give him, pushing my memories of him into oblivion and continuing on with life. With my career and my daughter, my legacies.
