In the Alien - Hive Novel:
Charles Davenport Cage III is the only son of a once prominent politician. His father publicly challenged the rights of the corporations to control the military and was on the brink of producing proof to smear several Companies when he was killed.
Charles, or Charlie as he prefers to be called never wanted to follow his father into the political arena and chose instead to sign up for the marines, dropping the Davenport moniker and distancing himself from the fallout. Decorated numerous times, his closest shave was escaping death in a crash that killed his parents which left him in hospital for months. On discharge, Charlie went straight back to the corp, however the damage from the crash had changed his personality and he was prone to recklessness and insubordination.
The Company chose to place him with an elite covert ops squad with the full agreement of the Military Commanders. Cage would gain too much public sympathy if he were to be dishonorably discharged but having him die on a mission would make for easier paperwork.
Charles suffers from mood swings caused by his accident and these directly influence his actions. He's also has problems with narcotics and alcohol, both of which severely impair his judgment though swears he's clean now.
Currently he's on Morana Station and seemingly destined to become just another experiment.
In the Torchwood Novel:
Charlie Cage has worked for TW Cardiff for two years, assisting Emily with medical duties when required and serving as a member of their security squad the rest of the time.
When Emily is placed into a psychiatric facility he is elevated to being a member of the team, albeit on a supposedly temporary basis.
