Fleischer is a genetics and bio-weapons specialist.
 He's been working in a lab for the past three years, conducting experiments in secret for both the military and the companies, neither of which know about the others plans.
Used to keeping a low profile, he can often come across as rude and obsessed with his work. He treats his lab techs appallingly but every new student clamors to work with him. His current assistant is Katharine Costello, seconded to his department via the Company Directors and he often treats her like a first year student not the accomplished scientist that she is. He holds the old fashioned view that women should be seen and not heard but can switch on the charm if he has to, as his five wives will attest to.
Divorced five times, Fleischer has three children who he never sees or contacts, the fourth was killed in an explosion while out on manoeuvres with the Marines - he was a Corporal. He's currently married to a much younger woman whom he hasn't seen for almost two years and who has just served him with divorce papers.
At 52, he's on the verge of a breakthrough in his research but needs more test subjects and the Company have gone all out to give him everything he needs to succeed, including the lives of the crew if necessary!
In the Torchwood Novel
Fleischer is a robotics specialist, approached by the Government to work on a special top secret project, but when his work is hijacked and his family are taken hostage, he begins to dread working for the mysterious Mr Smith.
