Robert d'Artois was born in Vannes in the Year of Our Lord 1287. He was the son of Philip of Artois and Blanche of Brittany. His father stood to inherit the County of Artois when he died of wounds suffered at the Battle of Furnes. Robert's grandfather, an experienced soldier, died several years after his son at the Battle of the Golden Spurs leaving the future of the county in jeopardy. The right of Robert's aunt, Mahaut of Artois, to the county was upheld and she was given the lands and titles based on proximity of blood. Robert continued to challenge this claim with little success.

While he inherited a lesser title of seigneur of Conches, Robert was not satisfied. His ambition and greed, coupled with the sense that he was wronged, caused him to continue to battle his aunt. He counts the King's brother, Charles of Valois, and his son, Philip, as close friends and allies. Their political views are aligned to his own, and in direct opposition to those of the King who continues to uphold the right of his aunt who is now Countess of Burgundy.
