Serge Lifar was born in Kiev, Russian Empire, on the 2nd of April 1905 and was one of the most well-known male ballet-dancers of the 20th century.
He was trained in Kiev by Bronislava Nijinska and was accepted in the Ballets Russes in 1923. He was described as very handsome and with a tendency to have an out-of-control ego which made him unpopular among his ballet companions.
He eventually became the main ballet dancer of Paris.
Around 1930, he had a two-year intensive affair with Natalie Paley, a Russian Princess who had been gaining a career as a model since her marriage to Lucien Lelong seven years earlier. The affair was ended when she began her noticeable liaison with Jean Cocteau.
He died in 1986.
