|PROMINENT ROMANIAN SCIENTIST STILL MISSING, DECLARED LEGALLY DEAD|
BUCHAREST, ROMANIA. Dr. Oana Lazareanu is still missing and presumed dead, six months after her initial disappearance. Lazareanu, a world-renowned hematologist, graduated summa cum laude from Transylvania University of Brasov where she received her bachelors and masters, and received her doctorate from Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest. Her work with the Romanian Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion has led to advancements in the treatment of hemophilia, leukemia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. A search of her apartment in downtown Bucharest during the early days of the investigation revealed signs of a struggle and a significant amount of blood matching Lazareanu's blood type, but despite the best efforts of the Bucharest police, there are no new leads and the trail has long since gone cold. Based on the evidence of foul play at the scene, Lazareanu's parents, Danut and Maria Lazareanu, have asked the Romanian court system to declare their daughter legally dead. The paperwork was finalized today.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Lazareanu's family," says Dr. Adriana Constanta Colita, President of the Romanian Society of Hematology. "Her fierce intellect and dedication to her work will be greatly missed. The world has lost a great scientist. We can only hope those responsible will one day be brought to justice." Dr. Lazareanu was scheduled to lecture at the society's annual conference next October. Instead, a memorial service will be held in her honor.
