Background:

The bards who appear in Celtic myth all express the element of air. Of particular importance was Amergin, who crafted the conquest of Ireland for his people, the Milesians, a tribe of gaelic Celts. When faced with a druidic wind sent by dannan to confound the invading Milesians, Amergin invoked the higher power of the land itself. He sought connection through an acknowledgement of Ireland's true sovereignty as abundant Nature.

Other bards of note are Taliesin, son of Cerridwen, whose transformational journey also associates him with water and the cauldron. Ossian was the bard whose claim to fame included an extensive stay in the Otherworlds realm, Tir na nog, the Land of Youth. Ossian;s mother was transformed into a deer, & in that shape raised her son in the forest for many years before Finn, Ossian's father, found his boy while out hunting. Angud Og, the bright, clever son of the Dogda, was reknowned for his skills of love, as well as his bardic talents. "A Master of Love" The harp on which Angus crafted his poetry & songs of passion is still a powerful symbol of connection to the Muse. Ogma is also a son of Dagda. His bardic skills led him to develop the famous druidic Ogham script, an essential means of communication. Ogma is also associated with Ogmios, a strong, Herculean god of wisdom and eloquence.

The role of the ancient Irish bardic poets is difficult to explain for several reasons. Perhaps this is mostly so because modern Western society contains no exact parallel with the Gaelic tradition of the Poet-Musician. As we shall see, however, the Bards were an extremely powerful class in Gaelic Irish society. Next to the King or territorial ruler, the Bardic Poets filled the highest position in the social structure. They were revered for their dual role as both artist and historian, and were very often the most influential advisors to the King. In the earliest times, the Bards were all expected to fill the roles of poet, musician, arbiter, and historian, but later distinct specialties emerged within the bardic class.
