In the Torchwood Novel:

Torchwood's team leader. Jack's origins are obscure and he likes it that way. However, he has vast practical experience of working with aliens and dealing with crisis situations. He has come through a lot of scrapes intact, and is unafraid of dangerous situations. In fact, he's usually ready with a flirtatious quip whatever the threat.

Jack is a time traveller and former con man from the 51st century. He is bisexual and immortal. He also has the ability to heal others and limited telepathy.

In the 51st century, the man who would become known as Jack Harkness lived in the sandy "Boeshane Peninsula" with his mother, father and brother. However, Jack's childhood was one of tragedy, losing both his brother (Gray) and father to an attack upon his homeland. In later years Jack was once a prisoner of war, and later a 51st century Time Agent.

Partnered with another Time Agent, Captain John Hart, Jack was a nefarious character who went from planet to planet pilfering everything he could. After leaving the Time Agency, he lost two years of his memories and subsequently adopted the alias "Jack Harkness". He has not revealed his real birth name to any of his team although they are quite curious about his personal history.

Jack has been described as both "lethally charming... good looking and utterly captivating", as well as "flirtatious, cunning, clever and a bit of an action man". He is lighthearted with a sense of humour and there is the suggestion of an attraction between himself and Gwen although neither have acted upon it.

Jack has no qualms about killing a person of any species if it is necessary however with regard to the dying, the aged, and the lonely, Jack displays kindness and sympathy, going so far as to lie to ease pain. This humanity and compassion for the dying may relate to his adamant existentialist philosophies.
