For five years the armies of the world fought back and forth across Europe. Three years ago the missiles started flying. Most countries were hit hard in the nuclear exchange, but no one had a decisive advantage, and the war went on. Tanks began breaking down, and the supply of spare parts gradually dwindled to near zero. Divisions which had started with 20,000 men were lucky to put 2,000 in the field.
But the war dragged on.
Sergeant Steve Boyd had been in the thick of it from the beginning, and watched young men come and go from his reconnaisance platoon. At first they'd all been volunteers, professionals, then conscripts gradually began to replace those who perished. He did his best to keep his men alive, but sometimes one's best is not enough....
