I am Appia Volusa Marcella, known in the Arena as Maldamia, daughter (in hiding) of Senator Titus Clodius Eprius Marcellus and his wife,Lady Flavia Appia. I was born in the year 57,in the heart of Rome. And for the last two years,I have also been a gladiatrix in the arena of Pompeii.
Two years ago on my 19th birthday,my Father,in his infinite wisdom, promised me to General Aulus Caecina Alienus- Of one of the finest Houses in Rome, but an older man and one of my Father's closest friends. Caecina had watched me grow up,and had been practically an uncle to me. Little did I know he had designs on me. Once betrothed, I felt trapped. My mother was angry as well; however, neither of us could change Father's mind. But the Fates, who can fickle and true bitches, can also be kind in Their fashion.
One night, before dinner, I was strolling in the gardens and picking flowers when I overheard Caecina's hushed voice from behind a wall. I didn't know the man he was speaking to- there was no one talking- but that he was speaking to someone was evident at the start and stops of an otherwise one-sided conversation. I quietly moved closer to listen. I knew it was wrong, but I had an idea my father might want to know what was going on. Then I heard him- soft, faint, but no mistake- it was my father's voice, and they were plotting. I thought, perhaps, they were plotting against Helvidius Priscus- an old enemy of my father's- but they were plotting against the Emperor!
Knowing that I could die, or worse, if either Father or Caecina found out I knew their plans, I went to my mother and told her. She kissed me, gave me a small box of gold, then told my maid to hide me far away. Vesta took me to Pompeii (a place my family, nor the General, ever go) and now we live here- I as a gladiatrix, and she as my sister and a free woman. I know not what happened to my mother, for that kind of news rarely makes it to a gladiator's ears, and no one has come searching for me,either. Hopefully, I am safe- as safe as one can be when fighting in the arena.
