As if she could be expected of anything less, that ostentatious Ms Critique had indeed noticed my gown’s encore ‘performance’. What more could be done but remain delightfully pleasant despite her snide commentary? No matter how you cut her she is Pretentieux Critique and apt to behave in her particular manner. Never mind that I am indeed royal blood after all, obviously without an entourage for company she likes to conveniently forget.
“Ah, yes. Well you see I’ve not even an opportunity to stop home and to miss this would be unforgivable.”
Attendees were still filtering in and it was Starwood Nott’s always entertaining antics which broke Critique’s razor-sharp smile. Of course then there were other arrivals spilling in through the grandiose doors causing Pretentieux to begin floating around to assess all who entered. As Stewards and Ushers began to fan out in preparation for a high profile guest I saw the Madam catch one in her clutches as he was trying to slip by. Initially couldn’t help but wonder who required such pomp when arriving at the Opera however my curiosity was quickly sated as he twisted from her grip with polite smile and nod then presented his greetings to me.
“Greetings your highness. I come bearing a messaged from the Mighty Bull of Ma'at, Beloved of Set, Beloved of Ra, Beloved of Ptah, He Who Causes Hearts to Live, The Glorious One of the Double Diadem, Lord of the Two Lands, Pharaoh Awoserra Aqenenra Apepa. He humbly invites you to join him in the balcony above where you can both enjoy a splendid view of the opera.”
Arching a single brow delicately and flashing an intriguing grin I glanced up to meet the gaze of the Usurping King. His expression was as cunningly gallant as mine looking down from his auspicious perch. “Humbly invites, does he?"
“He says,” the usher’s voice dropped so that even the snooping Ms Critique was unable to overhear, “That he will of course indulge you with an eye exam prior to the curtain rising, to ensure you are able to fully appreciate the show.”
I could hardly suppress my laugh, “I would be delighted to join Apeppa, please, lead the way.”
