| Keeping the perch |

My ear flicked back as I heard a pen scratching on paper not far from me. It seems someone had noticed my perch, but didn't seem bent on shifting me. Good. This is the best seat I've had yet and I'll fight tooth and claw for it.
The woman passed on and I gave a couple of half-hearted licks to my chest and front paw. Mustn't show I had almost lost my cool there.
Good gracious, what now? My nose wrinkles at the smell of smoke as a young man tumbles into the seat next to the one immediately behind me. I turn my unblinking eyes onto him as he slouches in the chair and props his legs up on the railing.
"Hey, cat!" he drawls as he takes a drag from the cigarette and makes a show of blowing the smoke out. He winks at me and then turns his attention to the program. I blink one eye deliberately in response before turning back to watch the people taking their seats below.
