From the beginning of my time here, I've gone through roughly 60+ characters. Half of those have been deleted, but I keep them on file with the codes for their homes should I feel the need to use them again.
I love characters. I'm sporting quite a few now, but in truth only 20 or so are active writers. Meaning they belong to a novel. A couple are special or seasonal characters, and have their place annually. I create characters for a specific storyline or novel, not just on a whim. I've killed off two or three in a storyline before deleting them...still have them in a file though.
It's very painful to delete a character I've worked hard to create. I don't do the deed very quickly. Usually takes a few tries. Still I have created a few mistakes in my early days here; dumb characters that had no real meat to them (if you know what I mean). I've been given a few characters by folks who happen to be done with them and moved on. That is always happy.
There are a couple of characters of mine that hide in odd genres and actually posted for quite a while, then the storyline or novel went away. I keep them on board because I really, really like them. I find time to work on their homes now and again, waiting for them to be useful once more.
Captain StarCastle will always be. She was my first character and best represents who I am. Both as a writer and a real life character.
Oh, and a character I created and deleted, then brought back the avi with a new name actually worked out to be needed in a novel that was created shortly after his resurrection. Cool.
Characters are like toys. Some you play with all the time. Some sit on a shelf and look pretty. Some you pack away so they won't get damaged. Others you box up and store away for later. But they are never, ever really gone. As Robert said, you set some aside to make room for the new voices, often using the old character as the starting point.
