The Captain’s Compass

Destiny lies in the Captain’s strong grasp
Where will the wild winds of fate blow?
His compass holds mysteries, a future unknown
The tides, the strong currents, where will they flow?
The compass knows wishes made deep in his heart
And somehow feels what his soul needs
What force does it hold, what magic inside?
The Captain’s new course, new headings he reads.
The cover is opened - the needle points North.
He frowns – the sea’s cold, the winds brutal
The bitter snows blow and cover the ground
All his efforts to stay warm are futile.
No need to go there – at least not this trip
No purpose to face Winter’s ice
The glaciers, the gales, the strange Northern lights
Memories of such places will surely suffice.
He closes the cover, blue lapis gleams bright
A strange rock, endowed with such mystery
There’s power encased in the magical stone
Calms his mind, brings him peace and tranquility.
A flick of his wrist and the compass awakes
This time pointing West, straight and true
The voyage is better, off Mexico’s coast
The sun shines there brightly, warm water teal blue.
There’s charm to that land, and history as well
Aztec culture and magic abound
Long beaches, white sand, tequila will flow
Treasures to covet, pirates’ wealth to be found.
A voyage that’s short – but no desire to start.
He’s been there so often – the route is well known.
A look at the needle – it’s spinning again
The Captain’s heart aches, love’s desire has grown.
He touches the lapis and likes the cool feel
What new quest, which routes lead to danger?
A course bearing South, vast seas to be crossed
Icebergs, long cold nights – perhaps grand adventure?
Nay - not what his heart craves, his body, his soul
He won’t sail by the bright Southern Cross
The voyage, filled with peril, waters so frigid
His Black Pearl’s too precious – he won’t risk her loss.
Now this shows some promise – the needle points East!
The lands are untamed, with riches that beckon
Africa’s beauty, the wild beat of her drums
His heart’s rhythm echoed, his need for love spoken.
Traveling much farther, on to the Far East
Where fortunes are many, the Orient’s prized jade
A treasure of culture, of legend and lore
Fine silks, lustful pleasures, gold trinkets to trade.
The compass is fickle, and changes its mind
To the land of the Sphinx, pointing back to the west
A potent force draws him, where Pyramids rise
He nods in approval - aye, his compass knows best.
Here deep in the mysteries of Pharaohs and Queens
What magic has lured him, what meanings are found?
A lover that calls him, a puzzle, a riddle
Somehow his heart needs this, but questions abound.
But onward he sails, o’er the sea to the Nile
A rogue, a swashbuckler, this bold pirate Captain
A whisper that’s ancient, a rhyme sent through time
His woman of mystery – “Lotus Blossom” – his Sesen.
As the saga unfolds, time and tides will tell all,
Lovers dare, face the risks, solve the secret
Their hearts intertwined, far more deep than the sea
Eternal love’s tale - “My Heart Belongs to a Pirate.”

A little explanation about Jack’s mysterious compass. The compass, traded with a voodoo priestess for a sack of gold, is a compact device whose domed cover is made from pure lapis lazuli. The inside lid is detailed with a map of the heavens, and the compass disk itself is sliced from a walrus's tusk.
Lapis lazuli is a dark blue mineral – a natural stone with inclusions of golden Pyrite, giving the impression of stars shining in the dark blue sky. Lapis Lazuli is bright and sparkling under the sunlight, but will become dark and gloomy in candlelight or lantern light.
In Egypt and Babylon lapis lazuli stones were highly valued. In Babylon magical incantations were engraved on plates made of lapis. Egyptian judges carried this stone on the neck with an inscription "True". Lapis lazuli figurines of scarabs (sacred beetles) symbolized Pharaoh power. In ancient China balls made from Lapis Lazuli were symbols of power and they decorated royalty’s clothing. In ancient Rome amulets and talismans were made from the dark blue stone.
The stone is believed to help with many ailments and possess magical properties. It is thought to aid with acquiring wisdom, intuition, awareness, objectivity, clarity, creativity, expanded consciousness, dreams, purity, courage, and serenity. It is also thought to help with sleeplessness and to help with decision making.
It is the gem of truth and integrity - the stone of the gods - and was revered in ancient Egypt, which is of particular interest to Jack and his lady, Sesen. Jack’s compass time and time again has proven that it leads to his heart’s true desire.
