Before applying to a novel it's always a good idea to talk or message the MOB's of that novel. The MOB's can give you a good idea of the tone of the novel as well as letting you know if they are in need of a specific type of character and what storylines are currently going on in the novel. This is also a good way to run a character or story idea the novel may not have at the moment and you are interested in writing. The MOB's can also guide you to informational posts at the novel which wil help you in writing at the novel.
Often before joining a novel you will read a story line that is right up your alley. It is not a bad idea to talk to the members who write in the story to see if they had a part for your character in the story or to get a feel of the novel from a member. It's easier to start writing with people after you have IMed ideas and become aquainted, that first post will come to you much faster.
When submitting an application to a novel try to give a good description of the character and how their story will be in the novel. You don't need to describe your character from birth but a well fleshed character makes it easy for the MOBs to see what a writer intends and it helps the writer. The more you know and feel a character the easier it is to figure out how the first post can be approached.
