I crept in utter silence through the dark,
the air was still, the shadows long,
the graveyard so desolate and so stark.
I came to the finish of my long journey,
and stood outside a tomb, my heart in my throat,
I glanced around and into the crypt went in a hurry.
The cold marble stairs echoed my footsteps,
as I slipped into the depths of the earth,
until I reached the place where the body was kept.
No soul was here, no body to be found,
only the sound of my breath to be heard,
at long last I sank to the ground.
It was here in this sanctuary of death I would stay
on this dark and scary All Hallows Eve
'til all those chocolate grubbing goblins and monsters went away!
No tricks nor treats would they find,
in my humble abode above the ground;
to reward the creepy imps was not in my mind!
Instead, at the first knock on my door I had fled,
rather than simply turn off the lights
or as I had often done, play dead.
No, this year I decided it was time
for me to take a full hiatus from this strange holiday
now you tell me, is that a crime?
No, I think not, although now I fully agree,
I may have gone to extremes in my plan to escape
to hide in a tomb is a strange place to be!
What was that sound? Oh, it seemed like a rat!
Oh look at the time, I think I must head back,
and yes, next year, I'll just scare off the kids with a bat!
