I have been working on a new way to cross-promote novels and wanted to make you all aware of it. This came out of discussions at PansDen over the summer. We have just started the pilot program.
The Sister Novel Concept
Sister novels like sister cities are two different places linked through bonds of friendship, ideally each novel would have two sisters.
Steps to select a sister candidate:
1. Compatible subject matter but not too similar, i.e. Vikings, cowboys and the Riders of Rohan
2. Change genres, say from History to Horror
3. A different “standing” novel, i.e. A new novel paired with an older one.
Then use special events, awards or real life connections to tie the novels together. Ideally each novel will have a “sister” section on the dust jacket with monthly highlights and a banner. The purpose is the promotion of both novels and the cross over of writers and ideas resulting in a more dynamic PanHistoria. I would suggest that at least one MoB from each novel join their sisters so they can post in planning and discussion topics. Right now for instance, New Tales from Middle Earth is accepting nominations for the Quarterly awards and I would like the sister MoBs to nominate. By keeping abreast of what is happening in the novels you can suggest writers to cross-over or other ideas.
The idea arose from the mingling of personalities and exchanges of ideas made possible by our "summer camp." After discussion with a number of people I put together the following plan. The beginning group of novels “belong” to those who participated in the discussion.
Included in the pilot group is so far made up of New Tales from Middle Earth, Hogwarts and Troy.
This group has a brand new novel and several older novels. I am currently in discussions with Alltrud, Into The Woods, and The Riddermark to join as well as looking for a Horror novel. Depending on responses I will be asking for a pirate novel, either Bitter Broth or the Delian League and Mythic Heroes to join us next.
Currently I have matched up so far:
New Tales from Middle Earth and Troy and Hogwarts is hoping to link with Alltrud and Into The Woods.
I would like to put Troy with PiRamesses due to the same historical time period and The Riddermark is a natural for New Tales from Middle Earth but any other matches will come after I know with novels I am working with, this pair needs a contemporary or other genre partner. Ideally you would have two or three sisters.
Once the pilot program is up and running and we start to see some results I hope to have others novels wanting to join up and you can recruit matches on your own.
Both New Tales and Troy have their sister sections already on the DJ so you can see what it looks like, ideally all will look the same.
If you wish to participate I need a banner and the summary text. Once I have them all I will make sure the appropriate parties get what they need for their dust jackets to start, the summaries should change once a month.
