It Might Have Been Food

They assured me that it was food. It appeared to be true, contained as it was in a chafing dish, served on the carvery. Others in the room seemed to find it edible. But when the carver used his deftly handled knives to deliver the mass to my plate, I was sure that there had been a mistake.

It was a beautiful misty day in Blackpool, the nice hotel overlooking that blurred distinction between shore, surf, and sky. Every once in a while the tram would rattle past, momentarily blocking my view of the Victorian style balustrade along the beach.

There were rumors what I would be confronted with, but hungry as I was, I didn’t listen. I should have. Everything seemed normal as we went up to the restaurant. The view was lovely, large glass walls looking out into the mist. The carvery and buffet were set up along one wall, steam rising from dozens of shining covers, tilted teasingly over the hot containers.
I walked past others as they ate, glimpsing great slabs ham, roast beast, chicken, lamb, mushy peas, crispy potatoes cooked in lard, deep fried toast….as I got closer to the buffet, I delighted in the diversity of what I could serve onto my plate. Then the carver was there, smiling lovely over his meats.

“What would you like, miss?” he asked in a deceptively sweet tone. He was dressed all in chef’s whites including the puffy mushroom of the hat.

Silly of me, I said, “A little bit of everything.”

On went the lamb, beef, and chicken. I stopped him at the fish—can’t abide anything out of the water—and other seafood. And then it was there, that foetid mass of dark matter. The carver smiled as if it were his child, laying the round, black…thing so that it…touched my lovely roast. Thanking him, I went back to my seat.

While Martin continued to consume vast amounts of food, barely glancing at me or the view, I could only stare at what appeared to be a slice of asphalt on my plate. The fearful object was about as large as my palm, too big to ignore, too wide to hide under the smashed potatoes. Gingerly I touched it with my fork, barely feeling any give to the blisterous surface.

Finally noticing the look on my face, my husband asked, “Anything wrong with your black pudding?”

I knew then that I had come upon the dreaded non-food: black pudding. The horror!
