| Taking On Backwards Broom Racing |

New, top of the line, uber fast Firebolt Jetstream in hand, Viktor stands at the entrance to Hogwarts's backwards broom maze. "Backvards?"
"Yes, backwards."
"Vy?"
"To make it more challenging? You wants hoops with that?"
"The spinning ones that vill add a time penalty of touched?"
"Those would be the ones. Say, why are you making your Ws into Vs when you've perfected your English at Hogwarts enough not to?"
"Vomen here seem to expect the heavier accent. I am a gentleman so am happy to oblige."
"Makes sense, I guess. Let me get the rings in place. Won't be but a minute."
Viktor waits patiently for Harry to get the hoops in position through the maze, idly watching someone at the next game over getting whacked by the Whomping Willow with the stick the person was using going after a hippogryph shaped pinata.
Precisely one minute later Harry is back. "All set to go. Just one teensy little thing."
"Yes?"
"There MIGHT be some *cough* dangerous *cough cough* obstacles in there."
"Vat do you mean, dangerous?"
"The person who went just before you ran into blast end skrewts that were charmed to float at broom flying level and there were one, or two, okay three, there were three ninjas with swords and those sharp pointy star things ninjas like to throw."
"Ninjas?"
"Yes, but the ninjas were in a good moood and the guy only lost part of one ear and a toe - not really sure how that happened as his shoes were on and the shoe was not cut - but I digress. He's fine. Madam Pomfrey gave him a potion to regrow the ear and toes and another for the burns "
"Burns?"
"From the blast end skrewts. He's going to be 100% in a day or two plus, he's got one of the best times on the leaderboard!"
"So vatch out for blast end skrewts and ninjas."
"Maybe. We got the ones out that were there but," Harry shrugs, "could be we missed one or two. And no telling what else will pop up."
Ready to tackle the maze?"
Viktor always thought Harry was a bit mentally unstable. Viktor shouldn't point mental fingers though as he shrugs and replies, "Bring it on."
Sitting his Firebolt Jetstream as he normally would, Viktor gets in position with the broom pointing backwards.
"GO!"
Viktor shoots into the maze, swiveled at the torso to be able to see to navigate. Straight ahead are two rings spinning at a fairly fast clip. One of the hoops is on the small side Viktor will have to streamline if he doesn't want anything touching the ring as he shoots through it. Just have to time getting through the first, larger hoop... And he's clear. Viktor tuckes in arms and legs, leans back on the broom till he's reclined on it. That way even if the image he's seeing is upside down, he can still see where he's going. He makes it successfully through the smaller hoop, sits back up and prepares to take the first turn he's encountered since entering the maze.
Just after that turn Viktor encounters his first intersection. Decisions, decisions. Oooooh. Is that the Goblet of Fire just ahead? Viktor steers that direction, one hand reaching out to snag it only to jerk back at the last second. Could it be a trap? A portkey out of the maze and the time to that destination and back would be tacked on to Viktor's run time through the maze?
Ha. Nice try, Harry, not falling for that one.
Dead end.
Viktor curses softly under his breath for indeed having fallen for such an obvious lure. He increases his speed getting back to the intersection, making up for the time lost in going to look at the Goblet of Fire.
Five more turns and six hoops later, Viktor feels he's doing nicely. There's only been the one wrong turn and he's not gotten any penalties flying through the rings that he's aware of.
What's that noise? It almost sounds like a SMASH
BLUDGER!
Shit. At least fifty of them!
No longer flying a straight path, glad the pathways of the maze are large enough to give him zig zagging room, and thoroughly tempted to turn his broom around to fly forward, Viktor ducks and dodges the hard black balls known in Quidditch as bludgers. When he finally rounds another corner that seems to be bludger free, Viktor is pretty sure he's got a couple of broken fingers, a huge knot on his head from one bludger and possibly a mild concussion, and his left shoulder feels like it's probably dislocated. There are also other assorted bumps and bruises, along with plenty of abrasions.
Well, Harry did warn him there could be obstacles other than the hoops. Better bludger than sword wielding ninjas. Or is it? Shrugging, then nearly blacking out from the pain in his left shoulder, Viktor doesn't slow down the Firebolt Jetstream to keep better watch. If anything, he flies faster.
Several twists and turns later, Viktor judges he must be getting in the vicinity of the exit. He's making good time and he's not made too many wrong turns and the bludgers only caused him to lose a little time, or so he hopes.
Something small and golden flits in front of Viktor's face.
Is that a snitch?
First bludgers, now a snitch. A snitch that is right there within easy reach. Doing what seekers do, Viktor reaches for it with his right hand. As he's twisted at the torso so he can see where he's going as he flies backwards, the reach is a little awkward but Viktor manages. He snatches the snitch from the air.
"WHAT THE BLOODY HELL?" Viktor screams aloud, releases the small winged ball, staring at the palm of his right hand.
It's got got a deep gash in it. Damned thing's wings are razor sharp!
"Great Merlin's Ghost, is that a swarm of snitches?"
Viktor accelerates more while pulling arms and legs in, streamling much as he'd done to get through the smaller hoops, only this time it's to decrease exposed areas to those deadly snitches' wings. The swarm, flock, whatever you want to call it looks like a white and glittery golden cloud. There's no way around so Viktor's forced to fly straight through, losing track of the number of times he feels one of those small deadly wings slash against him.
When Viktor emerges from the swarm, his clothes are shredded and he's bleeding from countless cuts. He spys the maze exit just ahead, relief flooding through him. Once out of the maze, Viktor lets his broom drop down so he can tumble to the ground. Harry's face peers down at him, filled with concern.
"Ninjas?"
"Bludgers and snitches. How's my time?"
Harry points to the leaderboard. "Excellent. You're in first, at least for the moment."
